Life in Pieces by Dimitris Makrygiannakis
Travelling from a young age is one of those things which influences you so deeply that it could be life-changing. Such is the case for Dimitris Makrygiannakis, the author of the photo series “Vicious”. Being born in Greece and currently based in Stockholm, Sweden he has experienced the extremes of the European culture. His profound understanding of human nature easily shows in his work where he builds a world of unadulterated reality frame by frame.
Dimitris Makrygiannakis creates a distinctive style by often using repeated elements such as pointing hands and seemingly detached body parts. Playing with shadows and perspective also go hand in hand and are inseparable in “Vicious” where life is shattered, sometimes quite literally. A young troubled face behind a broken glass or a shadow of a child possibly holding a knife: these are just a few disturbing scenes that the photographer captures through his lens.
Dimitris Makrygiannakis also adds to the overall feeling of his photo series by the lack of post-processing and the realistic colors. As the author himself shares he seeks to convey meaning, symbolism, surrealism and as a whole to create photos which provoke questions and make the viewers think. In “Vicious” it naturally feels like all these artistic endeavors were successfully achieved.
